APPEAL: Consortium of Non-governmental Organisations Working with Migrants opens up to other interested parties

Added: April 14, 2010

The Consortium of Non-governmental Organisations Working with Migrants (the “Consortium”) began its activities in September 2000 as a three-year project, financed by a grant from the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights of the European Commission. After successful completion of the project the member organizations of the Consortium decided to register it as an independent legal entity, so that its activities could continue in the future.

The founding members of the organisation are the Association for Integration and Migration (formerly the Counselling Centre for Refugees), the Organisation for Aid to Refugees, the Counselling Centre for Integration and the Association of Citizens Dealing with Emigrants. The work of the member organisations includes all aspects of the integration of foreigners, including asylum proceedings. Legal and social services are provided to foreigners for the entirety of their stay in the Czech Republic.

After several months of relative inactivity, at the end of 2009 the Consortium requested a change of its memorandum and after confirmation of this a new period of its activities began. On 11 March 2010 the Multicultural Centre Praha and the Berkat association joined the Consortium.

The long-term purpose of the Consortium is the construction of a strong coalition in the non-governmental sector, capable of effectively protecting and strengthening the human rights of individual groups of inhabitants and creating new ideological and practical concepts in the fields of migration and the integration of foreigners.

The Consortium expects that its activities, among them the realization of joint projects, lobbying, media coverage and reciprocity of information, contribute to the improvement of the quality of services, increase the ability of member organisations to react in time to crisis situations and improve the attitudes and opinions of the media and the general public, as well as the legislature and court practice.

In the future the Consortium should function as a real platform, uniting non-governmental organisations in the field of migration, securing for them access to key political discussions and developing the ability of individual organisations to partake in the creation of strategy in the effort to strengthen the rights of foreigners in the Czech Republic and to achieve systemic changes in matters of the protection of human rights.

The requirements for entrance into the Consortium are that the organisation has a registered office on the territory of the CR, that its economic policies lead to unbiased and open accounting and above all that it permanently carries out activities for the benefit of migrants in the Czech Republic.

For more detailed information for interested parties on entrance into the Consortium, please write to Pavla Burdová Hradečná of the Association for Integration and Migration.
